Eleven-Year-Old Boy Dies After Pushing His Sister to Safety Moments Before Being Hit by Car
An 11-year-old boy saved the life of his little sister, but lost his own, after a hit-and-run driver plowed through a school bus stop, authorities said.
La’Darious Wylie and his seven-year-old sister, Sha’Vonta, were on their way to school when a car bore down on them as they stood at an intersection, police said.
The boy shoved his sister out of the way, but he was struck head-on by a car that did not stop, authorities said.
“He knew to look out for her,” the children’s mother, Elizabeth McCrorey, told the Charlotte Observer.
La’Darious died the next day at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. His funeral is scheduled for Thursday.
Two days after the incident, police said they arrested Michelle Johnson, 57, and charged her with felony hit-and-run resulting in death. She was released Friday after posting $25,000 bail, authorities said.
It was not clear whether she had entered a plea in court.
Sha’Vonta picked herself up and ran for help, the paper said. He died Oct. 28. His mother has donated his internal organs.
Relatives and friends have established a gofundme account to help pay burial costs for the fifth-grade boy.
Residents of his Chester hometown have asked city officials to rename a nearby park in La'Darious' honor. He played there every day.
